DAB Sales Top 20m

Digital radio sales in the UK have topped the 20 million mark.

Industry analyst GfK confirmed that domestic digital radio sales, including DAB, hybrid and internet models, were 19.8m at the end November, with a further sales of more than 300,000 expected by Christmas Day.

In the run-up to Christmas, retailers reported good sales of digital radios.

The 2014 Christmas digital radio industry advertising campaign was the biggest ever.

Digital Radio (DAB)

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), is a digital radio technology for broadcasting radio stations in a digital format.

Omni DAB Aerial

DAB radio stations have the same frequency at all transmitters across the whole of the UK. This is possible because of the COFDM digital transmission format, which enables the use of a "single frequency network". This is an advantage in principle for car radios, since re-tuning as you drive around the UK is not required.

One of the issues with DAB currently is that sufficient transmitters to provide optimum coverage aren't yet available, so the take up of DAB (including car radios) hasn't been high. The digital radio offered by satellite transmission currently has a better quality than DAB.

Omni DAB Aerial

The DAB operating frequency throughout the world is 175.928 - 239.200MHz but here in the UK we only use a small part of that bandwidth, 211.648 - 229.072MHz which requires a dipole slightly less than half the size of an FM aerial.

DAB -v- FM

DAB digital radio is different because, instead of being made up of analogue waves, the radio signal is transmitted digitally, as a series of 'zeros and ones'. You don't need a satellite dish to receive digital radio, just an aerial positioned in the correct place. However, you might need to have an external aerial installed if you live in a poor signal area; sometimes the wire that comes with a DAB digital radio isn't enough to allow good reception.

Traditional FM analogue radio waves are sensitive to noise or distortion from electrical equipment or the atmosphere. The waves can bounce off tall buildings and hills and become interrupted or distorted. As DAB digital radio uses digital signals, with plenty of extra information transmitted to allow the tuner to fill in any missing bits, the DAB signal does not suffer from the same problems as the FM signal.
