About Us

..........or maybe that should really say 'About Me'

I'm Alan Shaw a sole trader and the proprietor of Woking Aerials.

I've often been asked why did I call my business Woking Aerials being as I have always been a sole trader, well the name is very descriptive and to the point, I live and work in and around Woking and I supply and fit aerials so the business name of Woking Aerials is very apt.

I was born in Old Woking in the mid 50's, educated at Church Street Primary School before moving up to Highlands Secondary School having spent the first year at its Kingfield Annex.

On leaving school I worked for a couple of local builders before obtaining a full driving licence at the age of 17 years which enabled me to take up my current profession.

52 years later I still enjoy the job that I do although the technology has changed somewhat from when I first started, then we only had 3 TV channels and the majority of televisions were 'black & white'.

In order to keep abreast of the changes I regularly attend 'training days' around the UK learning new skills and new product development and deployment.

In 2007 I enrolled on a City & Guilds National Vocational Qualification, 'Level 2 NVQ Electrical and Electronic Servicing (Signal Reception)' when after having initially attended North Hertfordshire College, I was assessed 'in the workplace' over a period of months, installing aerials and related equipment in my customers homes.

I completed the course in December 2008 and in doing so became the first aerial and satellite installation engineer in Surrey to have gained this National Vocational Qualification.

In February 2008 whilst involved in gaining my NVQ, I also sat and passed the City & Guilds 'Digital Terrestrial Television - Domestic Aerial and Network Installation' course which is managed by the Confederation of Aerial Industries and sponsored by Astra.

In addition to the above qualifications I also hold a 'Safe Working at Height with Ladders' certificate and have a clean 'Basic Disclosure Criminal Records Check' as well as two million pounds Public Liability Insurance.

Using a sole trader has its advantages and benefits to the consumer, if the installation is not as it should be there is only one person to blame, me, the buck stops here. I cannot pass you from pillar to post, I must address the problem and bring it to a satisfactory conclusion, and fortunately because of the pride I take in my workmanship I have yet to receive a complaint.

If you are thinking about upgrading your aerial or satellite installation or require any advice before doing so, just give me a call and I'll see if I can help. 01483 740188
